I know. It sounds kind of weird. And I even get funny looks when someone new steps into Ezra’s room for the first time, but I’m telling you–this Montessori floor bed is great.
The first time I heard about the floor bed was from a friend. She told me about these kids who just slept on a mattress on the floor. And stayed there! I thought it seemed dangerous and strange, so she suggested I read Montessori From the Start.
Ezra slept with us for the first six months of his life. It was ok. It was nice to have him close to me and I loved the snuggle time, but honestly, I just couldn’t sleep. Maybe it’s because I’m a first time mama, or maybe I’m just a light sleeper, but every little move or breath from baby E startled me awake.
Too sleep deprived to function, we decided to transition him to a crib. Let me tell you. I was awful at getting him in there! He would be nearly asleep until I fumbled him. I didn’t like bending over to put him down. And well, I usually nurse him to sleep while lying down and the crib just cramped my style.
We finally gave the floor bed a shot. We slowly transitioned Ezra away from our bed and eventually into his own room…on the floor.
We were extremely careful to create a safe nursery with very little furniture and with clean floors that could be swept every day (and a secure baby gate on the door!). It took me some time to get used to the idea of Ezra not being in a crib. I would here little cries or stirs and still startle awake, but after a few months, I got used to it.
Ezra is now 17 months and we still have him on the floor. I still nurse him to sleep and I’m able to lay down with him until he drifts off. He’ll sometimes wake in the mornings and explores his room and toys, but usually he just sits on his bed and waits for us to come in. Sweet thing. This Montessori Floor bed has been great for us and I’m happy to report–my kids sleeps on the floor.PAID ENDORSEMENT DISCLOSURE: In order for me to support my blogging activities, I may receive monetary compensation or other types of remuneration for my endorsement, recommendation, testimonial and/or link to any products or services from this blog.
